Following attendance at an EU-UNAWE teacher training course in November 2012, Fifth Class teachers Mr Seamus Grundy and Mrs McGinn from St Mary’s Boys’ National School, Monaghan shared some of the lessons with their colleagues. Mr Grundy and Mrs McGinn then spent time working on Solar System projects with their own classes, and when finished they invited Libby McKearney from the Armagh Observatory to view the results of their research.
Libby visited on Monday 4th March and was very impressed with the boys’ knowledge and presentations. She also spoke to them about Asteroids, Meteors etc and answered hundreds of questions from the eager classes while being very pleased with their enthusiasm and curiosity. The boys had been researching the solar system for the past few weeks and valued the chance to get all their questions answered.
“I imagine the boys will be sad to see this topic come to an end! They really impressed me with their deep interest in the subject; we could have spent another whole day discussing astronomy together. Of course other qualities shone through such as team work – where for example the boys acknowledged any team members absent that day; very good research and presentation skills including the courage to stand up there and also the warm courtesy extended to a guest such as myself coming into the school” Libby concluded by thanking the Principal Mr McCinna, staff and boys for the invitation and for all their excellent work, very well done!
