during the celebration of the University of Heidelberg’s 625th Birthday
On 25 June 2011, the University of Heidelberg in Germany held a huge street festival called “Uni-Mile” where the public could walk through historic center of Heidelberg and learn about the work being done at the University. EU-UNAWE Germany had its own booth along this stretch, with information about the organisation, as well as activities for kids and families.
The booth included the European Universe Awareness mission, as well as information about EU-UNAWE Germany’s achievements over the past year, such as bringing workshops to kindergarden classes, giving training to teachers, holding family days at the Königstuhl Observatory in Heidelberg, and participating in science festivals. While adults learned about the organisation, kids could learn about astronomy by making sundials or watching a PlayMobil demonstration about shadows. Some of the adults, too, admitted to understanding how sundials work for the first time after watching the demonstration!
